About MAIM

What MAIM is

MAIM is a set of short mouse challenges that run in your browser: Precision (aim and mouse accuracy), Dodge (click-to-move survival), Reaction (reaction time) and CPS (clicks per second).

There is no sign-up. Settings and results stay in this browser, and you can clear your history at any time.

How we measure

  • Each input is timestamped with the browser's event times. Duplicate events are ignored.
  • Where the browser provides coalesced pointer events, we use them. These are samples the browser reports, not a raw USB polling stream.
  • Drawing happens on requestAnimationFrame, so what you see follows the display's frame cadence.
  • Results include estimates of display and input latency based on what the browser can observe. They are estimates, not hardware measurements.
  • performance.now() is a clock. It does not prove when a stimulus reached your screen.
  • Touch input is recorded separately from mouse input.

What we do not claim

  • We do not diagnose an 8 kHz polling rate or any other hardware specification.
  • We do not split reaction time into biological components.
  • We do not produce a calibrated Fitts throughput figure.
  • We do not recommend a sensitivity or DPI setting.
  • Scores are not fair across different hardware. A 60 Hz display and a 360 Hz display, or two different mice, will produce different results.
  • We do not diagnose a mouse switch from clicks per second.

Challenges and records

  • A challenge link reproduces the task layout and rules version. It does not reproduce your physical conditions, such as your mouse, display, browser or desk.
  • Scores shared through a challenge link are unverified comparisons. We cannot confirm they were earned on the same setup.
  • Personal bests only count against the same mode, preset and rules version.

Privacy

  • There is no account and no sign-in.
  • Settings and history are stored in this browser's local storage.
  • Usage counts are sent to maim.io so we can see which modes get played and whether challenge links get opened: page views, runs started and finished with their headline numbers, retries, challenge links copied and opened, score cards saved, and history runs reopened. Each event carries a random id for this tab and a random id for this browser, the page path, the referring site's origin, and a coarse browser family. No IP address is stored, no cookies are set, and no cursor movement is ever included.
  • If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, nothing is sent at all. The complete list of events is in the open source code.
  • When you create a challenge link, its compact challenge data is stored on maim.io so the link can be short. It is the same data the long link carries and nothing more: mode, preset, seed, your result, and the sparse ghost. No cursor movement, no identifiers.
  • Clearing history is permanent. Deleted results cannot be recovered.
  • Your full cursor movement is not uploaded. A challenge link you choose to share contains only the compact data needed to replay that challenge.
